1. Are there any computers I can use in the Library for my work?

Apart from a number of PCs and iMacs around the Library, there is a E-Learning Laboratory equipped with 40 PCs in the Learning Commons. All PCs and iMacs are open for public use. No reservation is needed.

2. Are there any laptops, chargers or other electronic devices for loan?

We provide laptops, MacBooks, iPads and a wide variety of electronic devices for loan at the Help Desk of the Learning Commons. Please refer to Laptop / MacBook Loans and Computer Accessories for Loan for details. All the devices are available on a first-come-first-served basis and have to be used within the Library.

3. Are there any printing and scanning services in the Library?

We provide a number of multi-function photocopiers / printers in the Library and the Learning Commons for users to print, scan or photocopy. Please find the locations and printing costs here.

4. Can I access e-resources from home?

You can access e-resources from home or any other place where Internet connection is possible. Please use your network log-in / windows account (e.g. Student: s250000xx / Staff: achan) to get access to all library e-resources when the “Library Electronic Resources Remote Access Authentication” window pops up. 5. Can I continue to use the Library after graduation?

All alumni are welcome to apply for a Borrower Card to access the Library and use its services after graduation. For application details, please refer to Application for Library Cards. If your card is lost or damaged, please report to the Library immediately.

6. Can I donate books to the Library?

You are welcome to donate books to the Library to enhance its collections and support teaching, learning and research of SFU. Please read the donation guidelines and procedures here.

7. Can I enter other local academic libraries and borrow the books there?

You can borrow a Reader’s Card issued by other local academic libraries at the Circulation Counter to visit the respective libraries. However, you are entitled to on-site reading privilege only. Please find the details here.

8. Can I request a library training workshop for my students?

Staff members are welcome to request training workshops about the search of library resources, use of specific e-databases and citation management for your students via e-mail to library@sfu.edu.hk. Besides, we organise on-site and online workshops on different topics for both staff and students to join on a regular basis. Please check library website, social media channels (Instagram / Facebook) and your institutional e-mail and register for the workshops that interest you.

9. Can I request books and articles from other academic libraries?

Full-time staff are eligible to apply for the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service to request books, book chapters and journal articles that are not available in the SFU Library. Please find the details of ILL service and the procedures for submitting requests here.

10. Do I need to apply for a Library Card to borrow library materials?

If you are a current student or a full-time staff member, it is not necessary to apply for a library card. Your student / staff card serves to facilitate your access to the Library and to borrow library materials. If your card is lost or damaged, please report to the Registry (for student) or the University Secretariat (for staff member) immediately. Click here for other members.

11. How can I book a room in the Library for studying and discussion with my classmates?

All group discussion rooms and study pods in the Library can be reserved through the room booking system, subject to a minimum of 3 occupants and a maximum timeslot of 2 hours. Please click here for the reservation procedures and other regulations before you reserve a room.

12. How can I make enquiries and/or suggestions to the Library?

To make enquiries and/or suggestions on library services, resources and facilities, you may fill out an Enquiry / Suggestion Form or send email to library@sfu.edu.hk directly. We will answer your queries as soon as possible and consider your suggestions carefully. 

13. How can I make recommendations on new books / journal titles / audio-visual materials?

Students and staff members are welcome to make recommendations for purchase of library materials. You may fill out the Recommendation Form for library acquisitions and summit it to the Library.

14. How can I request an item that is being checked out?

15. How can I search for course readings listed in the programme syllabuses?

With the introduction of ReadingList@Library service, you can login to Moodle and browse the reading list of each course with just a few clicks. The reading list indicates the loan status of print books and provides hyperlinks to e-book platforms.

16. How many library items can I borrow and for how long? How can I renew an item online?

17. How much overdue fines should I pay?

Overdue fines vary with collections and the categories of users. Please click here to view the detailed information on the overdue fines. You can pay the fines in cash or by Octopus card at the Circulation Counter.  

 
 

18. Is there any equipment for SEN users in the Library?

We strive to foster an inclusive study environment and support the needs of SEN users with adaptive equipment, such as a motor-driven standing desk installed with external adaptors and a desktop digital magnifier. Please find the details here.

19. What are the library opening hours? Will the Library open for longer hours during the examination period?

20. What if I come to the Library to return the loaned items but it is closed?

During campus opening hours, you can always place your loaned items in the book drops next to the entrances of the Library and the Learning Commons. However, you are advised to check our opening hours before you come.

21. Where can I borrow principal readings?

You can borrow items that are designated by your teacher as principal readings of a course at the Course Reserves Area next to the Circulation Counter. Due to high demand, these items can only be borrowed for 3 days and cannot be renewed or requested. However, you may find additional copies with a longer loan period at the General Collection. If the item is available in electronic format, you can view it online anytime, anywhere. 

22. Where can I search for the items I need?

You can search for the items you need on the library Discovery Search platform. If the item is in print format, you will see its call number, its designated collection as well as its availability on the search result list. You can borrow the item on shelf if the status shows “Available”. If the item is in electronic format, you will see the link “Available Online”. Click on it to view the item anytime, anywhere.

23. Why do I receive a recall notice with a new due date?

All library items are subject to recall upon the request of other users. Once an item is recalled, the loan period will be shortened to 14 days. You will be notified of the new due date via a recall notice being sent to your institutional email. If there are less than 14 days left from the date of recall, the due date remains the same as the original one. Late return will incur an overdue fine of HK$3 per item per day.
